What we did

Wrote an article for Uncommon Voices Collective's blog.

Project Overview

An excerpt from the article:

“How did I get invited into this room?”

Lately, this is a question I find myself thinking about frequently. I was at yet another Zoom event where I was the only black person present. I’d been invited to this small, private event with some powerful Christian leaders to discuss a series of pressing contemporary concerns. One older white man brazenly opened our discussion with a few of his thoughts on the Black Lives Matter movement. I could feel palpable tension roll off my screen as people held their breaths to see where he was going with this unexpected brashness. We weren’t there to discuss Black Lives Matter, and I could tell that his comment made more than a few people nervous. I held my breath as well, curious about his approach while keenly aware that part of the tension in the room was because there was a black person present. Even through the tension I held hope that perhaps this conversation would have some depth and would avoid being the sort of blanketed event that never really gets to the heart of anything. As he spoke my hopes were like a quickly sinking hot air balloon.

"Dea did amazing work at coordinating Lenten Gestures.  The reflections and art were not only high quality but reflected a commitment to seize the shifting historical moment that we face."

Juan Sarmiento
Executive presbyter, Presbytery of San Fernando valley

"I am sooo excited to know there are other Christians incorporating movement into their spiritual practices. I think many people are interested in exploring this, but church leaders often hesitate. "
